The best thing about making your own pillowcase is that you get to make it completely unique to you. So pick a fabric that you like to use as the base of the pillowcase (I'd recommend starting with a plain colour) or you can sew strips of different coloured fabrics togethers to make the base more colourful!
Once you have your fabric, fold it in half and lay an old pillowcase on top as a template. Cut out around the pillowcase on three sides, and on the fourth side (one of the shorter sides) cut approximately 15 centimetres extra, as this will be folded down later to keep your pillow safely inside its case! (You should now have 2 pieces of fabric the same size and shape)

Now that you have the basic shape of your pillowcase you can decorate it any way that you wish. I decided to add a little bit of patterned fabric that matched the base colour. You can also add things like buttons or lace, but make sure you don't put any where your head will be when you're sleeping!

If you want to personalise your pillow even more you can try embroidering a quote or a pattern onto it. I decided to add the quote from John Green: "I feel in love the way you fall asleep, slowly, and then all at once."
Keep in mind that if you are going to embroider it can be quite time consuming! -

Once your pillowcase is decorate exactly how you want, sew up the two long edges and one short edge.
Remember the extra 15cm I told you to cut earlier? Now you should fold it down and sew up the two edges of it, so it creates a sort of pocket for your pillow to sit in.

Now all that's left to do is turn it all the right way out and put your pillow in! (and also try to fight the urge to go to sleep ASAP).
