I wanted to make some chain(mayle) for my own personal use, so I decided I would make it more elaborate and intricate than I normally would. I started off making a Jazeraint (mayle between layers of fabric) but changed my design a third of the way through to a mayle vest (which in the coming months will have sleeves and a bit of length added to it)
I wanted to make some chain(mayle) for my own personal use, so I decided I would make it more elaborate and intricate than I normally would. I started off making a Jazeraint (mayle between layers of fabric) but changed my design a third of the way through to a mayle vest (which in the coming months will have sleeves and a bit of length added to it)
Wind some wire (galvanized gardening/electric fence wire 1.2mm gauge around a metal dowel (5mm diameter) into a coil, stretch wire into a spring, cut the links (will be shown how in a new topic soon) and then the fun really begins..
I made a waistcoat out of a felt mix material and started piecing together the mayle
As you can see I got quite a bit of the front covered before I decided do remove the backing from this project
As its an ornate test piece I decided to use up some of my spare brass and copper wires and do an inlay design (this design moves from the front to the back once or twice throughout
Without the backing and with rough chains measuring the minimum spacing (helps its exactly symmetrical) so I know where to fill in the gaps
Yes, i happened to also have these metal plates lying around my workspace so I incorporated them in too. Current ring count is roughly 10,000 separate links
Testing to make sure its still a comfortable fit (better to make it too big than too small as most people choose to wear thick padding on underneath it, I however do not)
Took the paint off the plates and still filling in the spaces
Took the plates out to work on them some more, mainly drill more holes, polish them up and engrave a design onto them
Polished up with 3 grades of sandpaper, coarse medium and fine for that extra gleam!
Took the amount of plates down to 4 from 6 and etched a design on the remaining ones with my hobby-tool. Leather thonging was woven through the links to try to lessen any gaps (I should have drilled more holes)
all 4 with big gaps at the side
Completed! Until I add the sleeves that is. Next pictures will show the size comparison of the links
A 2 pence piece on the vest (right hand side) for scale comparison. Next picture is a close-up.
Current Ring count sits at about 20,000 links
I had a look at a few pieces in the museum and to keep accuracy and overcme the slight design flaw, im going to alter the layout where the steel plates are
