Made from Sugru these point protectors are perfect for keeping your knitting needles together and for preventing stitches sliding off when you're not working on them.
Made from Sugru these point protectors are perfect for keeping your knitting needles together and for preventing stitches sliding off when you're not working on them.
To make a point protector for a pair of knitting needles up to about 4mm you will need two packs of sugru, I like to combine different colours but you could use two packs of the same colour. Start by opening the packets and gently warming it in your hands, I rolled mine into balls. If you want to make a point protector for bigger needles you'll need more sugru!
For a marbled effect, roll the two colours into sausages and then twist the two sausages together.
Squish the twisted sausages together and roll into a ball again. Repeat these two steps until the sugru is as marbled as you want it.
Mould the sugru into your chosen form, a simple ball, an animal or whatever else takes your fancy.
Push your knitting needles that you're making the protector for into your moulded shape. Make sure you push them in quite a long way (this is why you need two packs!)
Add any other decorations you want to your protector, I experimented with small gems and using a needle and my nails to make patterns and embellishments.
Carefully remove the knitting needles (otherwise they'll be permanently stuck in there!) I found it easier to get them out by gently twisting them as I was removing them. Reshape your protector if necessary, ensuring you don't close up the needle holes.
Leave to set for 24 hours.
Your point protector is now ready to use. Travel forth with your knitting, safe in the knowledge your stitches will remain on the needles and you'll have a pair of needles to knit with when you reach your destination!
