A simple pencil skirt, with waist darts.
A simple pencil skirt, with waist darts.
Choosing the fabric. I used this pretty floral tapestry fabric (gifted from Dalston Mill Fabrics), but this simple skirt would be perfect in any thick fabric- denim, cord or a canvas.
I made a simple pattern piece, starting with a rectangle, the top being an inch more than one quarter of your waist measurement (the inch allowing for the darts). Curved the side seam out a little, added a dart and it was ready to cut. I added seam allowances all around, cut the front on the fold and the back pieces separately, so an invisible zip could be inserted at the back. I always use greaseproof paper for pattern making, pretty cheap and comes on a roll.
Front and back cut, ready for darts to be sewn, sew at the side Seams and insert a zip. Next I folded the waist down, and just sewed like a hem, then hemmed the bottom.
Sewing in an invisible zip. Love these zips, as the name says they are invisible, look just like a seam.
