I use 1/8" width paper for this project, but you can use any width you'd like. You can cut your own paper strips from old magazines, or any other paper you have around, or you can use specially cut quilling paper. You first step is to glue the ends all of the 12 strips into a pile. Glue the 6 black pieces next to each other and the 6 blue pieces next to each other. You are just gluing them right near the end, not along the whole strip!!
After the glue has dried, it's time to roll! Fold over the very end and then roll the whole thing by hand. I roll it so that the blue is on the inside and the black is on the outside. When you get near the end you'll notice that the blue strips are all longer than the leftover black strips. If you want it to look nice and tidy with the black on the outside, then trim the blue strips so they are shorter than the black. But don't cut them all the same length. Cut the innermost one the shortest, then a little longer, a little longer, etc. and leave the black ones longer than the blue.
Here you can see that the blue strips have all been trimmed. Then make sure each strip has some glue on it, and finish rolling, smoothing out the outside of the spiral nicely. Let it dry. You can then add sealant such as mod podge or diamond glaze to make your spiral water resistant and sturdy. You can add a small quilled tight roll to the top and make it a pendant. You can make smaller ones (just use shorter lengths of paper to start) and glue them onto earring posts. You can glue them onto magnets for a fun set of fridge magnets. That would make a great gift! Make them in all sorts of colors! You could make a bunch of these and glue them to the outside of a painted mug to make a fun vase or plant pot. There are so many options for these fun spirals!
