I know there is an official name for this. I was just playing around with some paper. Its really quite addicting.

Cut a couple (i used about five) of different colored pieces of paper into fairly thin strips. It doesn't matter if the strips vary in thickness or if a single strip has different widths. It gives your art more character!
Using scissors to curl the paper like you would a balloon ribbon, give one end of the paper strip a starting curl. You don't really need to use scissors for this, you can just use a fingernail, or make it curly some other way. I just think its fun.
Roll the paper between your fingers to get the right kind of spiral. I think you get the idea
Roll up the rest of the strip to your desired size. Varied sizes are fantastic!
Now you can shape your spiral a bit. Squish it between your fingers to get different shapes. After you make some pinched corners, let it loosen a bit so you have this cool effect. Its sort of hard to explain, but try it on really tightly spun paper strips : pinch and let unravel.
Glue the loose end of the spiral down. Now you have a self sustaining spiraly circle
You can also do shaping after you glue the loose end down. It really doesn't make a difference unless you want to have the unravel part.
Now you need to glue down the pieces. If you are not using a quick drying glue, you may need to hold it there for a while. But it will still work if you don't have any fancy types of glue.
