About
After building all the projects in this book, what better way to relax by the pool or in the garden than in your hand-built deck chair? The wheels under the frame make this chair very easy to move around the terrace, so you can chase the sun or shade.

Steps (9 steps, 360 minutes)
-
1
For the short front legs, cut the 1¾ x 1¾ inches (4.5 x 4.5-cm) wood 6¼ inches (16cm) long with one end cut at a 20-degree angle. For the longer back legs, cut two more pieces 35½ inches (90cm) long with straight ends.
-
2
To attach the short front legs to the longer back legs, pre-drill two holes through the back legs ½ and 1¼ inches (1 and 3cm) from one edge (think of how two dots look on a dice—that’s the position of these holes). Glue and screw the angled ends of the front legs under the frame, making sure that the angled ends of the front legs slope down and inward. Use 2½-inch (65-mm) screws.
-
3
For the seat, cut six pallet wood planks 20 inches (50cm) long and sand smooth. Glue and screw five of these planks to the legs, with the front plank overhanging the front legs a little. Use the 1¼ -inch (30-mm) wood screws and pre-drill the holes to prevent the pallet wood splitting. (Reserve the sixth plank to use in step 8.)
-
4
To make the back support, from 1¾ x ¾ inches (4.5 x 2-cm) wood cut two pieces
20 inches (50cm) long. In each piece, drill a 3/8-inch (8-mm) hole ¾ inch (2cm) from one end, pre-drilling a smaller hole first to prevent the wood splitting. -
5
Drill a hole of the same size in the long legs, ¾ inch (2cm) away from the last seat plank.
-
6
Line the back supports up with the chair and push a bolt through the holes. On the inside of the chair put a washer and wing nut around the bolt and twist tight.
-
7
For the chair back, cut four pallet wood planks 16½ inches (41.5cm) long and sand smooth. Glue and screw to the backrest. Use the 1¼-inch (30-mm) wood screws and pre-drill the holes to prevent the wood splitting.
-
8
Set the backrest at a comfortable angle (loosen the bolt, adjust the angle, and then re-tighten the nut). Glue and screw the reserved seat plank behind the back supports (this keeps the back in place).
-
9
Screw the wheels to the front legs of the chair, using the ¾-inch (20-mm) screws. Touch up the cut edges of the chair frame with a dab of white paint.
