You need three fabrics - one must be the pretty one you want to show on the outside (i used tye dye flannel); the next must be a thick insulating fabric (i used terrycloth); and the last must be a liner (i used muslin). if my instructions are confusing then try these: http://www.skiptomylou.org/2008/09/26/oven-mitt-pattern/

First, for the mitt, trace around an existing mitt onto paper. Add a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Cut the pattern out. For the hotpad, make a 9x9 square and cut it out.
Trace your patterns as follows: Mitt- 2 of outer fabric and 2 of insulator (with seam allowance); 2 of liner (with or without seam allowance). Hotpad - 2 of outside fabric; and 8x8 one of insulator; one 8x8 of liner. In addition to these, cut out a small strip that will be used as the loop to hang the hotpad up by.
Mitt: Now, sew the liner together seperately from the rest of the mitt. Leave it so that the wrong side (with rough edges) is facing out. Fold the tab and sew it so that no unfinished edges stick out.
Mitt: Attach the insulator to the outside fabric, so that it is touching the wrong side. You don't have to attach it perfectly - a few stitches at each contour should work fine. Hotpad: Wrap the edges of the outer fabric around the edges of the insulator and liner to create a "finished" edge. Sew in place. Make sure that the insulator is touching the wrong side of the outer fabric.
Mitt: sew the two sides of the mitt together with the right sides facing each other, as you would a regular glove. turn right side out and insert the liner, so that the good side of the liner shows when you open the glove. Pin the wrist parts of each together. Sew. Hotpad: fold in the edges of the other outer fabric square and sew together, creating another finished edge. Before you get to the last corner, insert the edges of the tab that you made so that it's looped. Sew over it on your way around the hotpad.
