Instructions

  1. Small 02

The top is a giant granny square made with a small puff stitch instead of regular DC in each space. Pattern is as follows:
Ch 6, join with a slst to form ring. Round 1: Work beg puff st, ch 2, *puff st, ch 2; rep from * 3 times, slst into first puff. Round 2: slst to corner space, [beg puff, ch 2, puff st] in corner, ch 1, *[puff st, ch 2, puff st] in next corner, ch 1; rep from * around. Round 3: slst to corner space, [beg puff, ch 2, puff st] in corner, ch 1, puff st in ch-1 space, ch 1, *[puff st, ch 2, puff st] in corner, ch 1, puff st in ch-1 space, ch 1; rep from * around.
Continue as such, making [puff st, ch 2, puff st] in the corner spaces separated by a ch 1 and a puff stitch in each ch-1 space of the previous round. You're crocheting a granny square with puffs!
If you do not feel comfortable with the puff stitch, crochet a regular granny square.

  2. Small 03

When square is as big as the top of your milk crate (overlapping the edge very slightly is OK), it's time to start the sides. Work 1 DC in each puff stitch and 2 DC in each chain space. Crochet rounds, changing color when you want until your crate cozy is as tall as your crate. Fasten off and weave in ends.
As you can see, you can use pretty much any center-out square to make this pattern.
