Fashion is all about style...
But there’s something else behind every fabulous garment you wear: construction, or how a piece of clothing is made. This project has a little bit of both. You’ll learn how to fold a gorgeous origami coat. Cut out the square design below and follow the step-by-step folding instructions.
What is origami, anyway? Origami is the art of folding a single piece of paper into an object, in this case a coat. Fashion Origami provides directions for the coat along with a skirt, dress, shoe, and lots more.

You Will Need (1 thing)
- Origami Paper
Steps (13 steps, 10 minutes)
-
1
Choose a pattern for your coat. Flip the paper over. Then fold the paper in half, from left to right. Crease firmly, then unfold.
-
2
Fold the paper in half again, this time from top to bottom. Crease firmly, then unfold.
-
3
Fold in both sides, so they meet at the center crease. Do not unfold.
-
4
Fold the top of the paper down about 1⁄2 inch (1.3 cm) below the middle of the paper.
-
5
Flip the paper over.
-
6
Fold the left side down at a slight angle, as shown. Then fold the right side down at a slight angle. Make sure that both folds match.
-
7
This next part is a little tricky. You are going to make sleeves. Start on the left side. Slide your finger between the short flap and the long flap, so it makes a pocket at the top.
-
8
It should look like this:
-
9
Press the pocket down as you remove your finger. It should flatten into a triangle.
-
10
Now do the same thing on the right side. Slide your finger between the short flap and long flap, so
that it makes a pocket. Then press the pocket down, so it flattens into a triangle. -
11
Check your sleeves — they should look the same. If they don’t, adjust them until they are even.
-
12
Now fold back both sleeves along the dotted lines.
