Appliqué instructions for a 6-inch finished blockTrace four A units onto sew-in interfacing (Be sure to use interfacing for use with sheer to light fabrics). Trace the shape in the finished size, without a seam allowance. Leave enough space between each traced shape for a very generous seam allowance.
Layer the interfacing on top of the appliqué fabric, with the right side of the fabric up. Pin the interfacing and appliqué fabric together to prevent shifting.
Stitch on the marked line, all the way around the shape, leaving no gaps. Use either a regular straight stitch and the feed dogs up, or free motion stitching with the feed dogs down. If you are comfortable with free motion sewing, this is an easier way to handle tight corners and small details.
Trim around the appliqué shape with a scant 1⁄4" to 1⁄8" (6 mm to 3 mm) seam allowance. Clip the seam allowance at corners and curves.
Clip a slit in the interfacing. Take care not to cut into the appliqué fabric.
Turn the appliqué shape right-side out through the slit in the interfacing.
Use a bone folder or chopstick to smooth out the seams and corners. Press with a warm iron since most interfacings are made of polyester, and too hot of an iron may melt polyester interfacing.
Stitch the appliqué shape to the background fabric using a blind hemstitch and invisible monofilament thread.
