Do you have an oversized dress that you have no clue what to do with? Here's an idea! Rather than a simple resize, I'll show you how to refashion it into a cute romper.
Do you have an oversized dress that you have no clue what to do with? Here's an idea! Rather than a simple resize, I'll show you how to refashion it into a cute romper.
Using the shorts as a guide, fold and place it on the very bottom of the dress (also folded lengthwise) with side seams together.
Add allowance all around then cut. At the waist, add an extra couple inches so the crotch will hang low enough, to avoid a wedgie situation.
Once cut, you'll end up with 2 pieces. Lay them out one on top of the other with right sides facing. Next, pin and sew the crotch together, followed by the inseam.
For the top portion of the romper, there likely will be a lot that needs taken in. Fit to your liking then pin and cut to remove the bulk. For the back, you can remove the closure and add ribbon to the neck instead. *Mine had a zipper which I removed then sewed down the allowance and added 1/2 yard of ribbon on each side of the neck.
To cut the new armholes, use the tank top as your pattern. Once cut, fold over the edges twice and finish with a straight stitch, along with the side seams.
To join the top and bottom, place the top inside the shorts with right sides facing, then pin the waist together. Finish with a straight stitch. *For the photo, I pulled the top from the bottom after pinning.
Afterwards, insert the 1/4 inch elastic in the waist. But first, lay the allowance flat on one side and sew another row of straight stitch 1/2 inch from the first.
For the cuffs, simply turn up the old hem halfway then secure it in place. *My hem was 2 inches wide so I folded the cuffs 1 1/2 inch wide and hemmed it in place.
