About

I am one of those people that absolutely loves sushi, but dreads the process of making it. It’s not that I find the rolling hard, or the filling proportions strange; it’s that I dread having to make sushi rice. It’s a tedious process that requires a surprising amount of precision and time. You mix your vinegar with your salt and fan for 20+ minutes and even then there’s a very good chance that you’ve messed up on some way and have to start over again. It’s fickle and I don’t like it.

Upon discovering that they make pre-mixed and perfectly proportioned packets for instant at-home sushi rice I knew I was going to have to give it a go, so I thought I would document the experience and share it with you guys.

You Will Need (4 things)

  • 2 cup Sushi Rice
  • Tuna
  • Nori
  • ½ packets Sushi Seasoning

Steps (4 steps, 45 minutes)

  1. 1

    Your ingredients.

The back of the packet called for four cups of rice, but as I wasn’t cooking for an army I chose to half that. So that’s 2 cups of rice and 1/2 the packet of mix.

  3. 3

I actually have some specialty rice molds specifically for onigiri (have I mentioned my love affair with onigiri?). I used some drained tuna and put it in the middle of the rice ball. Then I covered with more rice and formed the onigiri with the mold and some cling film.

Then I cut down a sheet of nori to fight all the way around the onigir. I like nori, so I tend to over-use it a little bit whenever I get the chance. Seriously those seaweed snacks are the bombdotcom in my house.
