Description

An old (read: cheap) thrift store lamp gets a total makeover with some ombre dyed cotton clothes line! Yep... it's that easy.

Instructions

  1. Small 103689 2f2014 07 31 200024 dsc 0586

Find a lamp at your local thrift store. Cheap and ugly. You'll want something that is fairly smooth without too much texture so that your clothesline will adhere cleanly.

  2. Small 103689 2f2014 07 31 200151 dsc 0588

Dye your clothesline. For the ombre, put one length of clothesline in the dye for a while... a few hours. Place another length of clothesline in the dye for much less time... perhaps 30 minutes? Finally, place your last length of clothesline in your dye for a short amount of time... maybe 3 minutes. This is all preference but simply put- the longer the clothesline is in the dye the darker it will get so... vary your dye time and you will get an ombre effect.

  3. Small 103689 2f2014 07 31 200203 dsc 0589

Place a dot of hot glue on the base of your lamp and press the clothesline down. Make sure you have a clean sharp cut and use a little hot glue to keep any fraying down on the clothesline.

  4. Small 103689 2f2014 07 31 200036 dsc 0591

Run a thin strip of glue along the lamp and quickly press the clothesline down tight so that there is no part of your lamp visible from below... you want the clothesline to be nice and tight against itself.

I kept the base because I love all things brass, but no reason you could use some spray paint before wrapping your lamp in order to match a color scheme in your home.

A close-up so you can see how the wrap even picked up the undulation of the lamp... I love this, but any little detail on the lamp will be evident so choose one that's nice and plain!
