Here's a really quick and easy way to use up those last scraps of fabric to make a dinky place to keep your sewing needles or safety-pins.
Here's a really quick and easy way to use up those last scraps of fabric to make a dinky place to keep your sewing needles or safety-pins.
Cut your 2 pieces of fabric to double the width you want your book to be. With right sides together, overlock or sew both long edges and one short edge, leaving one short edge un-sewn. Turn inside out, push out the corners and press seams with an iron. Fold the open (un-sewn) edge inwards and then top-stitch all edges.
Fold the cover of your book in half and press with an iron to give you a crease down the "spine"
Pin the 2 pieces of felt together. Use enough pins to make sure the layers of felt can't slip.
Using your Pinking Shears, cut all 4 edges of your felt so that they are slightly smaller than the size of your cover.
Once you're happy with the size of your felt, pin to cover and then sew along the crease you ironed down the middle of your cover.
Your book should now look like this:
You can either call this the finished article, or you can then top-stitch the middle of the book. All this does is stop the pages always falling open at the middle. (Not a great explanation, sorry!)
Once you've got the hang of it, you can embellish your covers as much as you want!
