I had an old necklace laying around that I bought at a yard sale. Since I had it to take apart, I decided to make it into a Christmas present. I decided on earrings and just went.

Find your old, unwanted piece of jewelry. I had a tacky necklace.
Start deconstructing it into the pieces you want. I picked some pearls and a couple of the chain links.
Since I didn't like having loops on both ends of the pearl, I just pulled out the wire that was in there.
Time for a new head pin!
Bend the pin to one side so that it makes a 90 degree angle. (COaK decided it didn't like the picture I had of this. Use your imagination)
Grab it with a small pair of pliers right at the bend and wrap the end of the pin around until a loop is formed. Cut off the excess right where the loop closes.
Put the pearl and the earring hook on the link, close it up, and ta-da! A new earring from an old necklace. Repeat the process to make the second earring and you're done.
