This variation will introduce you to hemming raw edges, which will come up a lot in dressmaking.
Draw a square onto paper, about 60 x 60cm (24 x 24in) for a small scarf or 80 x 80cm (32 x 32in) for a large one. Cut out the paper pattern piece and pin it to your fabric, keeping one side parallel to (but not exactly on) the woven selvedge edges of the fabric. Cut out your fabric around the paper pattern. Turn each of the four raw edges under by 1.5cm (⁵⁄₈in) and press with your iron. Turn the folded edges under by another 1.5cm (⁵⁄₈in) and press again. Pin the folds to hold them in place.
Sew the folds down, using the 1cm (3⁄₈in) seam allowance guide and pivoting at each corner. Rather than backtacking, since you’re sewing full circle (or, technically, full square), you can finish by sewing a few stitches directly on top of the first stitches to secure them.
