No one wants to put harsh chemicals on the delicate skin of a tiny baby, but surprisingly there is so much junk in shop bought baby products (even ones that claim to be 'natural'). Many contain known skin irritants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, and nasty parabens. So here is a 100% natural alternative, which will probably work out cheaper in the long run. Enjoy :D (Shelf life: 3 months) 1 drops Organic Chamomile Essential Oil 2 drops Organic Lavender Essential Oil 50ml Calendula Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil 50g Organic Shea Butter

Instructions

  1. If you have calendula oil, skip this step. Firstly, if you don't have any calendula oil and can't get hold of any, you can make some by buying some dried calendula petals, or picking them and drying them yourself. Then stuffing a sterelised jar full of them then covering in extra virgin olive oil, put the lid on and leave in a warm place for about 2 weeks, shaking the jar daily. You could use fresh petals, but they may go rancid and would need to be changed every day.

  2. Wash your glass pot in hot soapy water, rinse, then put on a baking sheet. Put it in a very low heat oven for about 20mins to sterelise and dry out. (When it is done, becareful not to touch the inside of the jar with your fingers to avoid contamination).

Meanwhile, using a double boiler, or a glass jug in a pan of water (water about half way up the side of the jug - be careful not to get any water in the jug), gently melt the shea butter and calendula oil together until it is completely liquid. Turn off the heat.

  4. Add the essential oils (if using) and stir gently. NOTE: Always take caution when using essential oils on children, as some may not be suitable, and some children may be allergic. They should never be used neat on skin. Don't be tempted to use more than the stated amount, less is more when it comes to essential oils.

Pour the liquid into the (still warm) jar, and leave to cool a little before putting the lid on. Use to help heal and prevent nappy rash, or other dry/sore areas of skin. This cream should keep for around 3 months.
