Naturally I'm not very pretty, (as you can see from some of my project pics) but I prefer a clean face to a made up face. However there are plenty of times when you want or need to look your best and this is my go to look when I do use makeup.------------------------------------ This tutorial isn't anything special but is here to help newbies unfamiliar with makeup application.
1) Start with a clean and moisturized face. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have combination skin of dry and oily. It gets so overly dry that my skin tries to counteract this by producing too much oil. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - To keep your skin healthy and clean never apply makeup (which is heavy in chemicals and oils) to an unwashed face - Apply a good oil-free moisturizer with a sponge or the tips of your fingers. This will do several things: 1) It will provide the necessary moisture to balance your skin and keep it from getting oily 2) It will act as a base for your makeup to stick to and 3) It also acts as a barrier between your skin and the makeup - You can get expensive or inexpensive moisturizers. Clinique is always good for sensitive skin, you can also buy the less expensive Clean and Clear oil free which contains a mild acne medicine. For more protection you can also find a moisturizer with an added SPF
2) Foundation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In this particular photo I used Bare Minerals powder foundation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To apply... - unscrew top and tap a small amount of powder into lid - Swirl large kabuki in powder and tap brush on edge of lid to return loose powder - Firmly but gently apply powder to face in small, circular motions - Apply over entire surface of your face including you eye lids, neck and even ears to obtain a blended make up line. - Apply more powder using a small, flat brush to cover problem areas - Finish with Mineral Vale in the same way but use a large, soft brush instead. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you don't want/have Mineral powders a good alternative (and one that actually lasts longer)is an oil free foundation and powder. Cover Girl has a special line so your skin will stay fresh and clean. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To apply... - Use a makeup sponge to avoid contact between face and hands which can transfer more oil to your face - Pour a small amount of foundation on the sponge and apply all over face including eye lids, neck and ears to blend any makeup lines. -Use extra foundation or a concealer stick to mask any problem areas - Finish with matching oil-free powder applied all over face with a large, soft brush
3) The eyes ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now that your complexion is clear and even it's time to start accentuating your features starting with the eyes. I have small eyes for the rest of my face so there are a few tricks I uses to give the illusion of a large eye ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Take a soft shimmering shadow - silver or white/silver and apply with small, flat brush directly under the eye brow as well as at the corner of each eye. This will not only highlight the brow but bring light to the corner of your eye making it look larger, less withdrawn and fresh. - Select a neutral color, one that isn't too bright or dark (in this picture I chose a dusty rose. Use a small rounded eye shadow brush to swipe shadow back and forth directly in the crease of the eye and on the lid. - Next chose a deeper shadow (feel free to play around, you can uses dark purples, greys, browns, blues... I chose a dark brown in the picture). With a smaller (smaller then the neutral shadow brush)apply darker shadow from the middle of the eye lid crease to a few cm past the outer eye corner onto the brow. The extension of the dark color will make your eyes look like they go farther along your face then they do and by not applying the dark color from the middle crease to the inner corner of the eye, your eyes will stay bright in the area where it is smallest and most confined. - Next you'll want a sharp black eye pencil to outline your eyes. Close your lid and hold it taught with one finger, apply an even line starting from the middle of the lid edge to the corner of the eye (again, keeping the inner corner open while creating depth at the outer corner). Carefully draw in a cat-eye/wing a few cm past the corner of your eye with a flared upwards motion. Apply a soft thin line on bottom lid starting from the middle and connecting to the wing end at the outer corner. To finish take a thin, angled brush, apply dark eye shadow that you used and smoosh the pencil line into your lashline, blending the shadow and pencil and filling in any missed gaps. Do this for the bottom lash line as well, just make sure it's done lightly - Do not ignore your eye brow (like I did in the pic). My eye brows are not very defined, I don't have a lot of hair so they're difficult to shape and they are also an ashy color so often they seem to dissapear in pictures. To remidy the ghost brow or add a little more shape to the ones you have use a brow pencil or a shadow (that matches your hair color) and an angle brush. Follow the natural curve of your brow but be sure to apply it softly and blend afterwords or else they'll look scary and drawn on. - The last step in completing the eye is curling the lashes and applying mascara. Use an eye lash curler, start at the base of your lashes and gently work your way up squeezing and releasing. I have long lashes but they're very straight, you'd be surprized how much more open your eye looks after that lashes have been curled. Finish the eye with a good mascara (I use Mabaline Great Lash) starting at the base and slightly wiggling (to seperate lashes) and you work your way up. You can apply several layers if you want a more dramatic eye, but be warned that tends to get very gunky and unattractive. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And just like that your eyes are done.
4) Blush ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most people avoid blush because they think it will make them look like a clown but blush is actually a very useful tool. For example, my face is very round so I have little deffinition in my check bones. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -By applying blush from the outter corner of my check bones (just below the temple) and lightly sweaping across the apples of my checks I gain deffinition in my face that wasn't there before. - It also is a great way to look fresh, bright and youthful but ff you want to tone down the blush just sweap a little foundation finishing powder over it. - The most difficult part is selecting the right shade to compliment your skin. My skin is a little pink but has olive undertones so I find that a warmer neautral blush works best for me. If you need help chosing your correct shade go to a make up counter and start testing the different colors or ask a consultant/sales associate to help you decide.
5) The lips ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I always make my lips the last step of my routine... I don't know why but I do. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - You will want to mosturize your lips before you apply any gloss or lip stick. You'll find that many lip stick/stain brands are now including a balm with their products, personally I use Soft-Lips Chapstick because it not only protects but it also repairs your lips. - For those with a less defined lip, use a lip pencil to outline the shape of your lips, blend onto lips and apply lip stick using a lip brush - Finish your lips with a clear gloss to give them a plump, kissable look and shine. - Chosing a lips stick can be difficult. If your skin is darker you have an easier time pulling off rich red and purple tones. For those with pale skin pinks and neautrals work best. To find the right shade find a makeup counter with lots of testers or ask a consultant/ sales associate for help.
Think your make up is done? You have one last step! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) Set your makeup ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For a long night out I use this old stage trick to help my makeup last ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Take a can of airisol hair spray, close your eyes and hold your breath as you spray a light layer about 10" away from your face - Hair spray is an awesome way to set your makeup and help it last longer ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With that last step your basic look is ready to go and all in under 15 min!
