Bright colored flowerpots are easy to make using broken china and pottery or leftover tiles. Go through your cupboards or local thrift stores for cheap materials. Do not be afraid of mixing different colors and patterns as they make the mosaic more interesting.

You Will Need (13 things)

  • Tiles /broken china or pottery
  • Terra-cotta Pot
  • Hammer
  • Protective Gloves
  • Earmuffs
  • Grout
  • Water
  • plastic Spatula
  • plastic Cup(s)
  • Sponge
  • Safety Glasses
  • Cutting Board
  • Towel

Steps (7 steps, 600 minutes)

  1. 1

Collect broken or worn out china, pottery and tiles from your cupboards or visit the local thrift store. More colorful the better.

  2. 2

Then it is time to prepare the material for the project. Put on your safety glasses, gloves and earmuffs. Wrap the item (plate, mug, tile..) into a towel and/or use an old fabric bag. Place the wrapped item to a cutting board and hammer to pieces. You can remove smaller pieces and continue working with the bigger ones so you get even material. Use old ice cream or candy boxes to storage the material.

  3. 3

Mix the grout according to the package. Make quite stiff mix that will stay on the flowerpot. Work the pot in parts. Apply an even layer of grout to the pot's surface and press mosaic pieces to the grout.

  4. 4

Leave small approximately 0,5 cm gaps between pieces. Go through the parts you want to decorate with mosaic. Let dry.

  5. 5

Then it is time to mix a slightly more running grout mix. Usually the package has instructions for stiff and running mix. Use plastic spatula to fill in the gaps between the mosaic pieces. You can cut the spatula from ice cream box. Let dry about 15-30 minutes depending on the weather (if it is very dry and warm less might do).

  6. 6

When the surface of the grout is still a bit moist but does´t stick to fingers it is time to remove the extra grout. Take water and a sponge and wipe off the extra grout from the pot. You might have to do this twice and change the water to get mosaic pieces polished. Let the pot dry properly.

  7. 7

Use your new flowerpots to bring color in or outdoor decor.
