This is a Tutorial for making a Money Lei! While living in Hawaii, I have learned that they give out Leis for every occasion. Birthdays, Weddings, Sports Championships, pretty much anything. But this one is made for School Graduations!!!! My Brother is Graduating this year and so this is for him <3 I wanted to give him money, but I didn't just want to send him money in a card. Because I'm not able to be there at his graduation, I wanted something that would make a big impact on him! Ok so you can customize this in so many ways! -Change the colors to fit your occasion. -Use more or less money, to fit your budget. -Use big beads instead of KuKui Nuts. -Make it super long and wrap it around twice.
Step 1 Gather you supplies! Curling Ribbon 12-Kukui nuts (or large beads for spacing) Pen/Pencil Thin Width Double Sided Tape Scissors Construction Paper MONEY!!! 65 Bills Trace out your bill onto the construction paper, and cut out about 12 bills from each color.
Step 2 Separate your bills into sets. For my pattern I have 6 sets of Colored Bills, 3 of each color 5 sets of Money Bills, 13 in each set I set aside stacks of money and colored bills and then paper clipped them together.
Step 3 Starting on a short end, fold 1/4 inch of the bill over, then fold it back the opposite way. Doing an "accordion" fold all the way across. Then fold it in half like pictured. Folding the construction paper bills, might get hard because the paper is thicker, make sure to crease the folds really well.
Step 4 Cut about 12 inches of ribbon, and tie it around the center of your folded bill. Then put a piece of double sided tape on the bill, pull of the other side of tape paper and pinch the bill together, so it creates a fan.(I put purple paper on the bill to show where to place the tape). Do the same thing with the tape on the other side to make a full circle. Finish it off buy curling the ends of the ribbon.
Step 5 Cut about 4 feet of ribbon, tie a knot, then thread your needle and add on your first nut/large bead. (you don't have to add spacers to the lei, but it helps separate the sets and add length without adding more money) Then start stringing on your bills, mine went Nut, Purple, Teal, Purple, Teal, Purple, Teal, Nut, 13 dollars, Nut. Repeat. There is a small gap at the center of the circle fan bill. Right where you tied the ribbon in the beginning, and that's where you push the needled through. Make sure you don't go through the paper!
Step 6 When you get to the end, tie a knot. Then try on the lei, if you want it to be a little longer just add in the length to the ribbon that's been threaded through everything. You'll have a long strip of plain ribbon at the back of the lei. So to cover it up and make it look cool. Cut small bits of ribbon, tie it to the lei, and curl the ribbon! Ta Da! Awesome Gift Ready To Go! My mom wanted to be able to have other family member add money to it on graduation day, so I cut extra piece of ribbon to take, that way people can roll/fold up the money, tie a knot around it and then tie it to the lei anywhere.
