Cut Out + Keep

Monet Tote

B/c I felt like doing something completely different

So I became fascinated with knitting and crocheting bags and eventually ordered a few different handles from Joanns.com. While I did find many free patterns that I liked, I figured I would just make my own based on keen intellect and a keen eye. Ok, maybe just the keen eye. The pattern I wrote up is really easy but if you've never worked with handles before (like me b/c this is actually the first bag I did with plastic handles), just take your time and try not to get too frustrated over the fact you keep hitting your knuckles as you try to work. US crochet terms were used in the creation of this pattern and they're as follows: ch - chain sc - single chain hdc - half double chain

US crochet terms were used in the creation of this pattern and they're as follows: ch - chain sc - single chain hdc - half double chain

Instructions

  1. Small imag0109 1 1299630355

Begin with a loop, leaving a 2" tail and ch35 onto one of the handles. I use the knobs as a guide so set the ch between 5 of the knobs. When you ch on the handles, make sure the tail is tucked under each ch. With this, I end up with 35 ch (8 between each knob, 1 ch above each knob). ch 1, turn.

  2. row 1: sc in each till end. ch1 and turn. row 2: hdc in each till end, ch 2 and turn row 3: *hdc next 8, inc in next. Repeat from * till end. Basically, what you're doing is you're using the knobs as a guide to make your inc. So there should be 3 inc total to correspond with each knob that had a sc placed over them. Row 4: hdc in each till end. ch 2, turn. row 5: *hdc next 9, inc in next. repeat from * till end. ch 2 and turn. Row 6: hdc in each till end. ch 2, turn. row 7: *hdc next 10, inc in next. repeat from * till end. ch 2 and turn. row 8: hdc in each till end. ch 2, turn. row 9: *hdc in next 11, inc in next. repeat from * till end. ch 2, turn. Row 10: hdc in each till end. ch 2, turn. Row 11: *hdc in next 12, inc in next. Repeat from * till end. ch 2, turn. row 12: hdc in each till end. ch 2, turn. Rows 13-26: hdc in each till end. ch 2, turn. row 27: *hdc next 12, dec next. repeat from * till end. ch 2, turn row 28: hdc in each till end. ch 2 , turn row 29: *hdc next 11, dec . repeat from * till end. ch 2, turn. Row 30: hdc in each till end. ch 2 , turn. row 31: *hdc next 10, dec. repeat from * till end. ch 2, turn row 32: hdc in each till end.

  3. bind off, leaving a 22" tail for sewing later. repeat steps to get the other half of the bag. with one fabric, take one half and measure out the appropriate size to fit the hell of the bag to get 2 halves. Sew them together up to the 3rd or 4th row from the handles then inset into bag after you sew the two halves of the shell together and you're done. you can add a snap for a closure or leave as is.
