This is a mini Christmas tree skirt that I sewed for my sister's tree. I used scrapped Christmas themed fabric. There are 16 pattern pieces, sewed together for the top, and one solid red fabric for the bottom/back. I used fabric bias tape for the circle at the top. I made a button loop from red fabric. The trim is done in white thread in a blanket stitch.

Cut out 16 pieces using the same pattern from different fabrics. Arrange the pieces to your liking, and pin the pieces together. Sew the pieces together by placing the fabric right (i.e. pattern) side together and sewing the seams. Trim the edges. Then use the sewn circle top to cut out the bottom.
Lay the quit batting out, and the solid fabric on top. Cut the batting, with about 1/4 to an 1/2 inch shorter than the solid pattern. Lay the solid fabric on the bottom, quilt batting, and the scrap fabric on the top. Pin the pieces together.
Using clear thread, sew over the scrap fabric seams, and the edges. You don't have to lock these stitches. Clear thread can be awkward, so go slow. This will give the skirt a quilted look. *Don't sew the end edges yet!* Make a button loop out of the solid fabric by cutting a small strip of fabric about 1.5 inches wide and 4 inches long. (I'm guessing the dimensions here because I made several at once and cut them down - and then ended up using only one.) Place the strip long ways, take one edge and fold it 1/4th inch and press with the hot iron. Repeat on with the other edge. Then fold the two edges together and press again with the hot iron. Sew a straight stitch down the strip. Finally, fold the strip at an angle in middle, and press with the hot iron. Now place the button loop between the tree skirt fabrics, adjusting for length to button. Sew the edge close. On the opposite edge, sew the button. Now sew the bias tape to top edge of the skirt.
Sew the bottom edge of the skirt with clear thread. Then use white thread to blanket stitch around the bottom to add embellishment. ** Other variations for thoughts: 1. Multiple buttons down the edge 2. Ribbons to ties bows instead of buttons 3. Triangle pattern piece instead of semi-circle
