Description

Anybody who is a fan of the popular indie video game 'Minecraft' will understand this baked reference ;) I made this for my Boyfriend's 21st along with these mini dirt block cupcakes!

Instructions

  1. Start by measuring your baking tin and working out how much mixture you will need to fill the tin and how long it will take to bake. I made a Madeira cake in a 10 inch tin but you can make a victoria sponge in any sized tin.

  2. Test to make sure if the cake is baked in the center by sticking a knife into it. The Knife should come out clean, if there is still cake mix on it then the cake needs to bake a while longer. Once the cake is baked wait a while for it to cool in the tin. Then take the cake out of the tin and place on a wire rack and wait until it is at room-temperature. Cut the cake horizontally and spread strawberry jam in the middle over the bottom half. Replace the top half.

  3. Prepare the white fondant icing according to the instructions on the packet. It should be stiff but malleable and NOT sloppy like glace icing. Pour boiling water into a jug and leave a palette knife in the jug to heat it. (This makes it easier to spread the icing) Take some icing and using the hot palette knife smooth it over the cake. Be careful not to pick up cake crumbs accidentally with the knife and get them in the icing! I let the icing drip drop the sides of the cake to make it look more authentic ;)

  4. Once the cake is completely covered make up some red modelling icing and shape them into different sized squares. Press the squares onto the white icing. And your done! Impress your Minecraft friends and post a version :D

  5. For Minecraft Cupcakes! Bake a batch of chocolate brownies making them not as gooey as normal! Once they are set cut the brownies into squares and stack them so that they are as cube shaped. Make up some simple chocolate icing or frosting. Coat all the faces of the cube apart from the bottom in the frosting. Get a plate or tin a pour unsweetened cocopowder onto it. While the frosting is still sticky set the cubes into the cocopowder to make it look like soil. Open a packet of dried dedicated coconut and add some green food colouring. Mix it round so that all the coconut is green. Then put this on a plate like you did with the cocopowder and put the tops of the dirt blocks into the coconut to make it look like grass. TA-DA! You have your own little Minecraft cupcakes! Why not try out other types of block? You could make a sand block or a stone block! Somebody will defiantly get cookies if they make a diamond block ;)
