Historical Milk Paint

I'm not going to lie, this wasn't my favorite paint to use. It was pretty messy and the coverage wasn't very even despite constant mixing. But the color was beautiful and it was a great experience to learn how to paint with a historical paint.

You Will Need (7 things)

  • Milk Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Sandpaper
  • Chair
  • Washcloth
  • Water
  • Buckets

Steps (5 steps, 180 minutes)

  1. 1

Even though my chair was pretty raw, it needed a good sanding to even out the wood and get it ready for painting.

  2. 2

Wipe the chair down to remove sand.

  3. 3

The directions for mixing the milk paint weren't my favorite. And even so I didn't do a great job of following the directions. You're supposed to put the powdered milk paint in one bucket and then slowly add equal parts water into it mixing as you go. I did it the other way around but it still worked out alright.

After you mix all of your powder and water together for 2-3 minutes you have to let the paint stand for another 10-15 so that it can disperse and then if you can, strain the paint over a nylon stocking which I didn't have available so I didn't do that part.

  4. 4

Paint your chair evenly, making sure to not let dripping or pooling happen.

  5. 5

Let your chair dry a bit and then turn upside down to get the bottomside.

After I had finsihed with my first coat I noticed that despite my careful sanding some areas of my paint began to crack and peel so I went back and sanded those areas and did a second coat. After the second coat dried I went back and did a touch up on any uneven areas.
