I love to take ice tea mixed with pomegranate juice with me in the car. I like to mix this concoction in mason jars. This how-to shows you how to make a travel mug/sippy cup/spill-resistant container for drinking and traveling. This how-to shows you how to make a travel mug/sippy cup/spill-resistant container for drinking and traveling. You might want to do a few of these at a time. Start by painting the lid of the mason jar with porcelain chalkboard paint. I used the pebeo paint. Let the lid dry - add another coat or two if needed.
Use the center punch to make a little dent in the lid. This will keep the drill from swimming around when you make the hole.
When you get your grommet from the hardware store, it will have an inner diameter and and outer diameter. The inner diameter is a little larger than the diameter of the straw. You will want to drill your hole to the dimension OUTER diameter of the grommet so that the it will fit snugly into the jar lid. If you go to your local hardware store and not home depot, they will explain this to you if it's not clear with my description (written, of course, while drinking a glass of wine - yum! But I'm not drinking it from a jar). I tried drilling the lid a couple of ways: 1. while screwed on the jar and 2. by putting the lid onto a block of wood and I think drilling while on the jar worked best. You may have to use pliers or tin snips to remove bits of lid that remain around the hole that you've just made. I put the entire drill set up in a big box and drilled to contain the metal shards.
Now just shove that grommet into the hole. It should take a little wiggling to get it in there.
Almost done! You can see the box that I did the drilling in.
Now just wash out the jar and lid, add your favorite beverage, put the lid on and insert the straw and you're done!
