These paper masks were designed and built for theatrical and dance performances.

Instructions

Use a glass or foam head. Build it up with modeling clay. Cover it with plastic wrap.

  2. Small img15a

You can create your own paper pulp and add glue, or use a ready made product with a clay base.

  3. Small img09a 5

Rolll out your product on plastic wrap. Place it over the form and then start cutting away the excess. Use various clay tools to shape the eys, mouth, and nose. You can then build up on the base. Use cookie cutters or freehand model the mask. Let it dry completely and remove it from the form.

Trim the mask using scissors and using a sharp knife trim out the eyes, very carefully. You can now add a coat of wood putty, let dry and sand. You are now ready to decorate.

On this particular mask I used small plastic tiles and glued them in place according to my original design and research. This mask was finished by adding it to a brass band over vinyl and then adding the top headdress which is made of foam core board on lng floral picks.

The finished tiling was then grouted.
