This hat pattern is from a collection I'm working on called North & South. Whenever I am in the north of England, which is as often as possible, I am always inspired by how, quite frankly, sheepy, it all is! Everywhere you look you find yourself eyeball to eyeball with a woolly beastie and consequently the range of yarn available is spectacular and diverse. I particularly like the fact that whenever you buy some yarn, you're never very far from where is was grown, sheared and spun. The collection is based around that single act of buying my yarn up north but designing and making down south. West Yorkshire Spinners have introduced a new line of yarns called Illustrious and it was in this collection that I stumbled upon my starting-point yarn. The Lichen coloured yarn fascinated me from the moment i clapped eyes on it. I think initially it was because I couldn't actually work out what colour it was - in fact I still can't! It's kind of grey and sort of green and a bit mauve and a teensy bit ochre. I don't know and I don't really care. All I know is that the colour change is incredible when worked in the round and I think this ribbed hat really shows off the unique qualities of its variegation. Just think, depending on which shade your hat starts with, it could look completely different from the one pictured. It's an easy pattern using knit and purl stitches and is perfect for a beginner knitter.

Foundation Row: Cast on 98 sts
ROW 1: (right side) k2, [p2, k2] to end
ROW 2: P2, [k2, p2] to end
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 to form the rib Continue in rib until the hat measures approx. 20 cm/8 inches from cast-on edge
Shape Top Row 1: K2, [p2tog, k2] to end. 74 stitches Row 2: P2, [k1, p2] to end. Row 3: K2, [p1, k2] to end. Row 4: P2, [k1, p2] to end. Row 5: K2tog, [p1, k2tog] to end. 49 stitches Row 6: P1, [k1, p1] to end. Row 7: K1, [p3tog, k1] to end. 25 sts. Row 8: P1, [p2tog] to end.
Cut yarn, thread through the remaining 13 stitches and pull to tighten like a drawstring. Join the seam using mattress stitch You could add a pompon for fun if you so desire!
