This is actually a pretty simple project to make, but with a huge "wow" factor!

Start with an awesome derby photo. I used this one of Naptown Roller Girl Maiden America, taken by Dave Wood of Dave Wood Photography.

This photo was already a stunning black and white. If it's not, you probably want to make your picture black and white, otherwise it'll be a very challenging crochet project, as opposed to an easy one!
I used a cross stitch program to easily convert this photo to a 4 color graph, but pixelating the heck out of the photo works just as well! (I've done it both ways) -

Grab some corresponding colors of yarn, in this case, white, grey, light grey, black, and red (for the star on the helmet) a size G crochet hook, and start following along on the graph.
Every time you change a color, clip your old color, and tie the new color on with a square knot.
It's a pretty mindless, easy crochet project to make, but it can get tedious! I try to set a goal of 10 to 20 rows a night.

As you go along, you'll notice all your tied on colors are getting sort of messy! Take a few minutes to pull those knots through to the wrong side of your work.

When you're finished, you'll have an awesome looking blanket! All you have left to do is sew some fabric to the back, to cover all those ugly loose ends you've pulled through.
