I really was on a kick of trying to make something out of magazine pages. I found this idea on Threadbangers and decided to try making my own version and I created a tutorial while I was at it.

You Will Need (7 things)

  • Magazine(s)
  • Glue Stick
  • Round Mirror
  • Spray Paint Color of your Choice
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Small Piece Of Wire
  • Piece Of Felt

Steps (12 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

First you need to rip pages out of a magazine and roll them up into reeds.

  2. 2

Apply glue from a glue stick as you roll. So that later when you cut them down, they don't unfurl.

  3. 3

I made about 16 of these while watching tv.

  4. 4

I bought this small round mirror at the Dollar Store.

  5. 5

I flipped the mirror over and started hot-gluing the reeds onto the back. I was generous with the glue.

  6. 6

    Here they are all glued.

  7. 7

Here it is flipped over. I trimmed the ends to the lengths that I wanted.

  8. 8

I then covered the mirror with aluminum foil and took it outside to spray paint. I applied some metallic gold first all over. Then some metallic silver all over, making sure not to entirely cover up the gold. I wanted a two-tone effect.

  9. 9

Here it is spray-painted. I don't like the etched design on the mirror, so I will fix that in the next couple of steps by covering it with paint.

  10. 10

I made a wire loop to hang it with and glued it to the back and then glued on a piece of felt on the back to make it look a little neater and lay nicer on the wall.

  11. 11

Here is the silver stripe I painted with some gold dots.

  12. 12

Here it is hanging on my wall. It's slightly crooked, but that's okay. Adds character, right? =)

*Another thing you can add is, glue even tinier mirrors along the ends of some of the magazine reeds and in the middle of others. I saw that on another version Threadbangers, but I couldn't find any tiny mirrors in town.
