Make a magic ring, and secure with a stitch.
Chain 2, then work 2 double crochets into the ring.
Chain 2, then work 3 double crochets into the ring.
Repeat step 3 two more times, then chain 2.
Close the ring by pulling on the tail, and close the round by slip stitching in the top chain of your beginning chain 2.
Chain 3, then work 1 double crochet in the next two stitches.
The chain 2 spaces of the previous round make up the corners of your square. Into the chain 2 space: work 2 double crochet, chain 2, work another 2 double crochet. This creates the next corner.
Work a double crochet into each double crochet from the previous round, and work 2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet into each corner space. Slip stitch in the top chain of your beginning chain 3.
Chain 3. Work a double crochet into each double crochet from the previous round, and work 2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet into each corner space. Slip stitch in the top chain of your beginning chain 3.
Chain 2. Work a double crochet into each double crochet from the previous round, and work 2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet into each corner space. Don’t join with a slip stitch. Instead, cut the yarn and pull the tail through the loop on your hook.
Grab your needle and thread the tail. Put it through both loops of the first double crochet you made this round, skipping the chain 2.
Put the needle through the back loop of the last stitch you made. This creates a ‘faux stitch’, giving your square a neat finish.
While you have your needle out, sew in both ends of your square. And that’s it, you’re finished! :) Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, right? These squares are super versatile; you can use them to make anything from bags to scarves, and from afghans to pencil cases. The sky is the limit :)
