Everyone should have a little black dress in their closet. Here's how to make your own. =]
Start by folding your yard of fabric in half. I used a shirt as a pattern to trace out a simple t-shirt shape. I made it very large--the width is about 20 inches longer than my own measurements, and the length of the dress hits the middle of my thighs.
After you've traced your t-shirt pattern, pin down the two layers, and cut. Sew the side and shoulder seams.
Cut a rectangle out of your remaining fabric. The length should be about 20-30 inches, and the width should equal your waist measurement. Sew down the sides to create seams.
You should have created a tube with your rectangle. Fold the tube in half, wrong sides facing in.
Next, place your tube inside the t-shirt you had cut out earlier, right sides facing each other, pin the bottom edges, and sew. This part is a little tricky. Sorry the picture is so horrible.
Hem all raw edges, and you're done! Sorry about the bad quality of the pictures. I couldn't find my camera, and had to use my phone.
