Life Hearts Necklace

An accessory you can't live without

I made this necklace for a gamer friend's birthday. It looks good to have the pixels with sharp corners but it does make the necklace a tad spiky, so you may want to round them off slightly with sandpaper.

Description

I made this necklace for a gamer friend's birthday. It looks good to have the pixels with sharp corners but it does make the necklace a tad spiky, so you may want to round them off slightly with sandpaper.

Instructions

  1. Small 106562 2f2015 01 01 022140 img 3028

Draw a grid for your hearts on some scrap paper. Use a shrunken ruler to figure out how big your grid should be.* Draw your hearts into the grid, making sure you add an extra pixel in the top corners of your outer hearts for the hole punch. *If you don't have a shrunken ruler, all you need to do is draw a ruler on a piece of shrink plastic (you can include some colour swatches and hole punches of different sizes to see how they turn out as well) then cook them to the requirements on your packet of shrink plastic.

  2. Small 106562 2f2015 01 01 022601 20141018 151726

Sticky-tape a sheet of shrink plastic to your grid and trace on your hearts.

  3. Small 106562 2f2015 01 01 023139 20141018 151929

Un-tape your shrink plastic and colour in your hearts.

  4. Small 106562 2f2015 01 01 023416 20141018 154209

If you make any mistakes, just use a cotton bud and some nailpolish remover to erase them.

  5. Small 106562 2f2015 01 01 023516 20141018 184837

Carefully cut out your hearts and punch a hole in each corner.

Cook your cut out hearts to the specifications on your shrink plastic packaging. Be careful though, because I've found that the heat specified on my pack is incorrect and causes the plastic to curl but not to shrink. Your oven also effects what temperature/time you need to cook your plastic at. I had to re-trace, cut and cook the hearts at a different temperature as the first one I did shriveled up and never shrank because I used the settings that I would have in my old oven.

Cut your chain in two equal pieces. Connect one piece to a jump ring and the other to a lobster clasp. Cut the other end of the chains to a length you want the necklace to be.

  8. Small 106562 2f2015 01 01 031219 20141020 205129

To the other end of the chains you just cut, add jump rings and connect your hearts.

Ta-da! You're done. Go wear your necklace and flaunt your geeky skills.
