Lichenstein inspired 'POW!' artwork. Basic image taken from a high school chemistry postcard I have had pinned to my wall for years. Paint, cardbord and felt used to make a mixed media 3D picture to decorate your wall!
Create either a stamp or stencil (approx 5cm^2)to print blue dots onto the canvas as a background. I made a stamp from foam cylinders spaced evenly and glued to a piece of cardboard. I used a mix of titanium white and winsor blue acrylic paint to create a 'lichtenstein blue' colour. Cover the whole canvas in blue dots, trying to be as consistent as possible.
While the dotted background dries create the 'explosion', which will sit underneath the 'POW!'. I sketched 4 separate parts of the explosion onto cardboard. I drew 4 prongs to extend beyond the edge of the canvas, a large red and white cloud shaped explosion, a yellowish 'epicentre' and a red flame. These shapes can then be painted (again I used acrylics)and cut out. To create a pop art look I used a black marker pen to define the edges of the shapes. Then arrange the parts of the explosion in the centre of the canvas, and glue in place. PVA glue worked fine to hold the whole project together.
I don't have any pictures for this part of the process, just the finished article. To create the 'POW!' draw out each of the letters onto carboard. You will need two copies of each letter, so use two sheets of cardboard when cutting out. Use one set of letters as templates to cut out the felt letters. Allow a couple of millimetres around the edge of the templates so the felt letters are slightly larger. This is the trickiest part - using thick black thread sew the felt letters to the cardboard. As you sew stuff the letters to make them 3D. I used cotton wool and old tights as a cheap stuffing. Now colour the remaining cardboard letters in black. Then arrange and glue them to the stuffed felt 'POW!' letters to create a shadow.
Finally arrange the 'POW!' letters on top of the explosion. I tried to arrange mine so the different layers of he explosion were still visible. Glue into place!
