Leather Bow Belt

Don't waste an old belt-- reuse it!

My little sister got this cute little bow belt for Christmas that I thought was so cute so I decided to make my own. I am really pleased with this project-- it is one of my favorite things I've made! I used leather from a skirt that I got at Goodwill and shortened. It was the perfect length actually. I hope my directions are clear so that you can make your own!

Description

My little sister got this cute little bow belt for Christmas that I thought was so cute so I decided to make my own. I am really pleased with this project-- it is one of my favorite things I've made! I used leather from a skirt that I got at Goodwill and shortened. It was the perfect length actually. I hope my directions are clear so that you can make your own!

Instructions

The first thing I did was cover the skinny belt in the leather strip. I cut the long strip of leather long enough so that it can cover the belt and then I stitched the sides together so that they are tight. It is a little tricky around the clasp of the belt, but I just cut little notches and sewed them together. It felt a little bit like wrapping a gift, you just have to fold down the sides of the leather around the belt so that it doesn't look bunched up or bulky.

For the actual bow, it is just like making a fabric bow, (Check out my link, here). You have to have a large rectangle to start. The bow will be a little less than a fourth of the size of the original rectangle. Keep that in mind.

Next, stitch the edges of the leather together so that it makes a tube. This is just like the fabric bows, but the leather doesnt stay together as easily as the fabric so I decided to stitch them together just to be sure.

Fold the other ends together and stitch these together as well. Essentially, you have two tubes of leather... your fingers might hurt after a while because leather is kind of tough to sew through... that is why I recommend a thimble or something to push the needle through.

When you have your smaller rectangle of leather, figure out how you want the bow to buckle in the center. I then stitched the center together and wrapped thread around it a few times to make sure the bow was tight and snug.

  6. This is just demonstrating how the thread is wrapped around.

To make the center piece that goes around the bow, cut a tiny strip of leather and stitch the edges together, just like the larger piece. Then wrap the little piece around the bow and stitch the little strip's edges together. Then you are ready to stitch the bow to the belt!

After you have stitched the bow to the belt so that it does not move, you are done! If anyone has any questions, just go to my blog and leave a comment. I answer those faster than questions in the comments of Cut Out and Keep. :) Happy crafting!
