The key is to place everything in the order in which people should take it:
Plates or bowls should be at the beginning of the table so people can take these first.
The main dish should be laid out next to these – if you are serving something like a pie, lasagne or a whole poached fish, you may want to score out the portion sizes lightly to help your guests (otherwise people can be unsure how much to take!). Make sure there are serving utensils alongside.
Side dishes, salads, sauces, condiments and seasonings should be next. It’s nice to have a basket of bread, cut into small pieces, too.
Place cutlery in a jug alongside a stack of napkins at the end of the table – alternatively, wrap napkins around knives and forks to make them easier to carry. Either way, if they are at the end then no one should forget them!
