This love scroll is a perfect gift for that special someone in your life—and shows you care. Three ribbons complete the scroll—one to hang it, one threaded through as decoration, and one to keep it rolled up before you present it. You can copy the heart here, or draw your own, if you prefer.
This love scroll is a perfect gift for that special someone in your life—and shows you care. Three ribbons complete the scroll—one to hang it, one threaded through as decoration, and one to keep it rolled up before you present it. You can copy the heart here, or draw your own, if you prefer.
Mark the paper with practice lines: 7 pen-widths for capitals; 4½ for lowercase. Mix a little gouache with 1 drop of gum and some water, and, using a size 4 brush, apply it to the size C5 nib.
Practice the phrases. On scroll paper, draw a box 6 in. (15 cm) by 12 in. (30 cm). This is the outer edge. Inside this draw a second box 1 in. (2.5 cm) in the sides and 3½ in. (9 cm) in from top and bottom lines.
Measure 3⁄8 in. (10 mm) all the way around inside the center box to give you 7 pen-widths for the top line. From this inside pencil line measure outward 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) for the x-line (4½ pen-widths).
Trace the heart using an HB pencil. Turn the tracing over and rub with a soft 2B pencil on its side. Turn the tracing over again, place in the center of the scroll and use an HB pencil to transfer the design to the scroll.
Measure all of the phrases you have written on the practice sheet. Now find the center point on the line of each phrase. You will shortly transfer these measurements to the scroll.
Measure the innermost box, halve it to find the center and mark with a soft 2B pencil. Working either side of the center point, transfer the measurements taken from your practice writing and put pencil marks at the start and end of the guideline. Do this on all four sides.
Mix your gouache again, adding a drop of water to the mix. Use a size 4 brush and apply the red gouache color to the C5 nib. Now write the first phrase at the top. Wait until the gouache has thoroughly dried before turning the paper around and writing the next line.
Using the red gouache, fill your size 00 brush and paint the red heart using smooth strokes. When it has dried completely, use the double-point nib size 40 to draw the little hearts. Fill the nib using the size 4 brush (no reservoir is used with this nib). You can draw the hearts in different sizes and directions, but keep within the outermost pencil lines.
Cut out the scroll along the outer pencil lines. Measure down 1 in. (2.5 cm) and fold over. Tuck a ribbon under, glue and knot. Measure up 1 in. (2.5 cm) from the bottom and fold. Cut slits in the fold at equal distances, open out, and thread a ribbon through. Now erase the pencil lines. Finally, roll the scroll and tie a ribbon round the middle.
