Turn baggy, old sleeves into something more fun.

If you have a long sleeve shirt that is way too big to be otherwise altered, this is a great project. It makes thinner legwarmers so you can tuck them into your boots in the Winter when you wear skirts (the second picture). The lace actually came from the long sleeve of a lace dress that no longer fit. You can experiment with what you have laying around. Then the project becomes free, which is always a bonus.

Description

If you have a long sleeve shirt that is way too big to be otherwise altered, this is a great project. It makes thinner legwarmers so you can tuck them into your boots in the Winter when you wear skirts (the second picture). The lace actually came from the long sleeve of a lace dress that no longer fit. You can experiment with what you have laying around. Then the project becomes free, which is always a bonus.

Instructions

  1. Small 100 1233 1296029310

Cut sleeves off shirt and then cut to make the top even.

  2. Small 100 1235 1296029452

To make the drawstring casing pick the ribbon you are using and fold top over all around sleeve using the ribbon as guide to how thick the casing should be. Leave a little room for seam allowance (how ever much you want). Pin as you go. Sew all around sleeve leaving enough room for ribbon.

  3. Small 100 1236 1296029565

Pick where you want the seam to go (sides or back) then find the middle of the sleeve. Pinch out a bit of the front fabric and chop hole - only through the front!

  4. Small 100 1238 1296029721

This is where you will feed the ribbon later.

  5. Small 100 1241 1296029815

Cut your pieces of lace. Mine were 2 inches wide and the length of the sleeve.

  6. Small 100 1242 1296029947

Pin down lace as follows: starting at the top pin the lace right under the drawstring seam. Leaving the lace loose as you go, pin it down every 2 inches until you hit the top of the bottom seam.

  7. Small 100 1249 1296030097

Sew down along the lines marked by the pins. I sewed two lines at each spot to better reinforce it. If you want kind of puckered/slouchy lace, be sure to not pull the lace tight as you go.

  8. Small 100 1239 1296030222

Once the lace is done, add the ribbon. Measure of how much you want based on where you want the top of the legwarmer to sit and how much you want for bow tying. Thread ribbon through hole with safety pin.

Trim off excess threads, etc. Then have fun wearing them!
