I had some lace table runners that I didn't know what to do with and I have always wanted a lace top, but found lace fabric to be too expensive. So I created with simple rectangle top.
I had some lace table runners that I didn't know what to do with and I have always wanted a lace top, but found lace fabric to be too expensive. So I created with simple rectangle top.
CUT 2 RECTANGLES OF LACE. Mine was already the right size, but if you are starting with bolt fabric, you will need to cut 2 rectangles with the width being the height of your shirt from shoulder to below the belly button and the length should be from sleeve to sleeve depending on how long you want the sleeves to be. Mine was 30" by 20" including a 1/2" seam allowance.
CUT THE NECK HOLES. On one of the rectangles, fold it in half width wise and cut a scoop for the front neckline. You might use a shirt you already have as a guideline. Do the same to the other rectangle, but since this is for the back, it should be a shallower scoop.
BORDER THE EDGES IN BIAS TAPE. Because lace is so flimsy, I suggested sewing bias tape around the entire perimeter of both rectangles. This will prevent fraying and other mishaps. However, you can skip the entire perimeter and just so the armholes, neck hole and hem if you like.
SEW THE SHOULDERS. Now just place the wrong sides of the rectangles together and sew up the shoulder seams.
SEW THE SIDES. Put the shirt on and determine how wide you want the arms to be. Remember, lace is delicate, so it should be really easy to get your arms in and out. Mine was 7.5" from the shoulder seam.
SEW UP THE SIDES. From where you marked the end of the arm hole, sew down the sides to complete the shirt.
FINISHING TOUCHES. Now just serge the seams if you prefer and clean up the loose threads.
