Dress up kitchen cutlery and protect tiny fingers from sharp edges lurking in drawers with this set of custom blade covers. Fashioned from thick wool felt or sturdy leather, this super easy project makes a wonderful gift for the whittler, chef or butcher in your life.
Holding knife by its handle, place blade to be traced flat against paper. CAREFULLY trace around the outer edge of the blade taking special care along the blade edge: TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY DO NOT ALLOW YOUR FINGERS TO COME INTO DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE BLADE!
Next, use a ruler to mark another line 1/8 in (3 mm) outside of the original tracing then cut out your template using your craft scissors.
Place your template with the handle edge aligned to the outer edge of the felt sheet and trace the template outline onto the felt with a disappearing ink marker.
Be sure to place the teeth of your pinking shears about 1/8 in (3 mm) outside of the marked line so that the crimped edge does not cut into your marked stitch line. Cut 2 pieces.
Transfer embroidery pattern of your choosing onto felt and stitch according to pattern instructions OR sketch out your own design using a disappearing ink marker and a little imagination.
Align pattern pieces so that edges are matched and embroidery design is visible. Starting at handle end, stitch around outer pinked edge along marked stitch line. Do not stitch along the smooth edge.
Carefully slip your knife into its new protective sheath and gently store it away.
