Tons of variations can be done!

This was inspired by a picture of a cake with candy on it. It was very long ago, I'm sorry I do not remember the website. My son had three birthday parties last year, so I was forced to get creative. There are hundreds of variations for this....you can use any candy, lollipops, snickers, twizzlers etc..and any size or shape cake, two layer three layer, round, square etc. I think the picture that inspired me had a ribbon tied around the cake with a bow. I used Kit-Kats and Whoppers because those are my sons two favorite candies, and in the end he loved it because he said it " kinda looks like a pirate castle!" I also made pirate cupcakes....follow the directions on how to make the candy molds, and instead of making a cake, make cupcakes!

Description

Instructions

  1. Melt the candy wafers in a piping bag in the microwave 20 seconds at a time. They melt uneven so carefuly mix them together or flip the bag over every 20 seconds *twisting the bag and folding it under will keep the melted candy from oozing out

  2. Cut the tip off the piping bag and squeeze the melted candy into the molds. (I used pirate candy molds that were for cupcakes and just broke off the bottom post that was supposed to be stuck into the cupcakes.) I refridgerated the molds to cut the cooling time in half, but you can easily leave them on the counter for 20 mins or so. Twist the mold like you would an ice cube tray, they are set when they "pop" out

  3. Make any pre-packaged or homemade cake of your choice following directions. I used a chocolate two layer cake.

  4. Open all of the Kit-Kats and carefully break them apart into individual sticks. You might want to stick them in the fridge for a bit so they dont melt in your hands and are easier to break whole

  5. Frost the cake as usual ( inside outside and top )Any frosting will do, I used a jar of pre-made chocolate...

  6. Before the frosting sets, place each Kit-Kat about 1 inch apart around the sides of the cake. If you like, set the cake in the fridge for a bit to bond the candy to the cake

  7. Take the candy molds and using melted candy wafers in a piping bag like a hot glue gun, pipe melted candy on the back of the candy molds and on the Kit-Kats where you want to place it. Hold for about five-ten seconds until it hardens and sticks

  8. Crush the candy either in a processer or plastic zip lop bag and sprinkle on the top of the Cake. I used Whoppers, but in hindsight I wouldnt again...once the malt is exposed to the air it becomes very chewy...not crunchy!
