About

For my end of year fashion show, I needed some shoes to match one of the outfits, so decided that the best way to go was to decorate some! These ones are inspired by my little pony and subversive kawaii. And here's how I made them!

You Will Need (6 things)

  • canvas Shoes (I used sneaker-style heels)
  • ½ m glitter Tulle or other fabric that does not fray
  • Markers - here I've used Letraset twintip promarkers however other permanent markers such as sharpie are good too
  • 1 A4 sheet Craft Foam
  • 2 m Ribbon
  • Glue - a glue gun is good, so is PVA

Steps (11 steps, 60 minutes)

  1. 1

This is the pair of shoes I used as a base. They are plain white canvas with a plain white rubber sole.

  2. 2

First things first, draw a design down on paper so you know exactly what you're doing when it comes to drawing on the shoes- this will save ruining them later on.

  3. 3

I first applied glitter tulle to the tongue and toe sections by pinning it on roughly, cutting it and then hand stitching it onto the shoe.

  4. 4

I then made small ruffles out of the glitter tulle and machine stitched them around the tops of the shoes.

  5. 5

The final step with the tulle was to fold in the edges and sew a strip down the back.

  6. 6

I chose twintip promarkers to apply the surface pattern design as it has the advantage over paint, being permanent yet lays flat and does not crack.

  7. 7

Use these to apply your design, using the paper design as a guide.

  8. 8

To make the wings, I placed tracing paper over the shoe and drew a template for my design. This wing design is inspired by the pegusus wings on my My Little Pony toys which I had a brief obsession with when I was younger, and nowdays love to pieces.

  9. 9

Trace two pairs of these in craft foam, and then glue the pairs together for strength.

  10. 10

To these add detail using the markers. Then mark the holes where the lacing would go through and punch holes through them.

  11. 11

To Finish I laced the shoes with ribbon, adding the wings at the top.
