The pants I used were an old pair of my husband's jeans. I did a complete overhaul on them so they would fit me. So, for the sake of time, this tutorial is just for turning any pair of jeans into a ruffle pencil skirt. Pencil skirts are often made to fit tight. For a more modest look,I suggest using a pair of jeans that are a little big in the legs so that the skirt won't hug too tight. I look forward to see your versions!

Supplies needed are pictured to the left Don't forget your jeans.
-Try your jeans on and measure how long you want your skirt to be. -Mark them and cut them off at that mark. Put the remaining pant legs to the side for now.
-Using a seam ripper or small pair of scissors, open the inseam on the the pants from the bottom all the way to the zipper in the front and all the way up to the waist in the back.
-Turn the jeans inside out and line the outer seams up. -Lay the jeans flat as illustrated.
-Using a ruler and a fabric marker/pencil, draw a straight line from the zipper all the way down to the bottom eliminating the crotch. (as illustrated)
-Sew along the that line. (I suggest sewing with a baste stitch first. try the jeans on to make sure it is flat in the front and then make a permanent stitch.) -Trim excess fabric
Repeat steps 4 and 5 on the back of the skirt.
- Use a serger or zigzag stitch the seam allowance to keep the fabric from fraying. -Turn the skirt right side out and press the seams flat.
-Lay the skirt flat and measure the hem from left to right. -Times that by 4 to get the measurement for the ruffles.
-Grab the pant legs you cut off earlier cut the bottom hem off and open the seams.
- Cut into 4 1/4" strips.
- Sew the strips end to end to get one super long strip.
- Fold it in half and sew a wide stitch all the way down the strip using a 1/8" seam allowance. - Pull the bottom thread to make the ruffle.
-Pin the ruffles to the bottom of the skirt taking care to have equal ruffle distribution. - Now go ahead and stitch them on with a 1/4" seam allowance. (We're almost there)
-Zigzag or serge the seam allowance so it won't fray. -Press the ruffles down with the iron. -Carefully stitch the ruffle down to the body of the skirt
