Iris folding is the technique of placing folded strips behind an aperture to create a design. Here three tie shapes are cut from yellow card and folded strips of blue paper layers behind the cut outs. Iris folding originated in Holland and it is called iris folding because the centre of the design resembles the iris of a camera or eye in traditional circular designs. Iris folding is a fun and easy paper folding technique that can be used to make greeting cards. It is also a good way to recycle papers such as the insides of envelopes such as this tie card.

Cut the three apertures in yellow card. Put the template on your worksurface. Now place the yellow card on the template, good side down, so you can see the template through the tie shapes. You are working from the reverse side. Tape in place so the card and template don’t move.
Collect regular envelopes that come through the post at work and at home, look at the patterns of the insides. Select envelopes with blue inner patterns. Cut the strips of paper so each is about 10cm by 2cm. Fold your strips of paper lengthways and group in to colours. The strips don’t need to be folded exactly in half, just folded over lengthways.
Cut several small strips of sellotape and put on the edge of your worksurface. Select two groups of blue strips. Now take one strip and place over “1” on the template, fold inwards, and tape both ends down with sellotape. Take another coloured strip and place across “2” and tape down. Continue alternating until all numbers are covered. As you are working on the reverse side it will look a mess, until you finish and turn over to see the good side of the card.
For the second tie select three groups of blue paper folded strips. Again start by placing the first colour over number "1" tape in place and then take a second colour of strip and place over number "2" then a third colour over "3". Continue alternating to cover the tie. As you use this technique you will see that the paper strips just need to fit across the aperture and the ends can be trimmed.
Finally repeat the technique for the third tie shape.Carefully remove the yellow card from the template and look at the good side. If this is your first time at Iris folding it will be a complete surprise! Finish the card with a greeting and two strips of paper top and bottom.
