This is the way I braid in my dreads. I use this technique for wooldreads, synthetic dreads, loose hair and rexlace. I also included another technique I don't use that often myself and is a bit trickier for beginners, but it tends to hide your own hair better if it differs from the dread colour. Some FAQ's answered: - I need about 25 - 30 dreads with my undercut, a full head will usually take about 50 to 60 of them. - I virtually wear dreads all the time and leave them out one week every month or so. - I keep my hair fairly short since it's faster to braid dreads in. Minimum hairlength is about 5cm (2 inches). - The dreads I made here are felting wool (which you can pick up at any craftstore and are easily shaped using soap and water). Half of them are standard colours, the other ones I dyed myself to match my hair exactly.

Using a (rat's tail) comb, divide your hair into little squares. If you don't and pick up locks of hair at random, stray hairs will pull on your dreads and they will hurt or eventually give you headaches.
FIRST TECHNIQUE: Now, fold your dread in half and around your real hair.
Pull your dread tightly around your hair as shown in the picture.
Here's the tricky part: Start braiding down in the same direction, while trying to keep the initial hoop tight. If it isn't tight your dreads will start loosening after a few days. You might need some practice. If this is your first time putting in dreads I suggest that you don't start with a row whereof the base will be very visible. Since your first few rows will probably look messier than the last ones you do.
When you run out of hair put a rubber hairtie in it. I use rubber since plastic hairties tend to break very easily.
TECHNIQUE 2: Put the middle of your dread at the base of your little square patch. Divide the patch in two equally sized amounts of hair.
Start braiding one side of the dread with your hair. Try to keep the dread from shifting by placing your finger on the non-braided side.
Now, prepare to do a whole lotta more of those. ^^ If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
