This is a great way of revamping something you love, or maybe something you have never worn because the colour didn't suit you or in this case were just 'bla'. Remember to check your fabric first as you can't dye certain fabric, the dye just won't take. Also note the colour mixing rules apply (e.g.. blue on red gives you purple), so if it's white or pale coloured that's perfect. Choosing a colour, Okay so think about the colour rule or you could end up ruining your item. If it's pale or white, than you can go for any colour like I said there is a wide range so see what's in trend or simple what suits you. Also if your using an ombre effect you can use a few different colours. Different technique, there are so many dip dye, tie dye, ombre and double dying. So don't think you have to dye the whole thing or just have a solid colour. Have a play with different items to see the different effects (you can always swatch a piece of old fabric if your unsure). If you have a plain white shirt why not ombre the bottom of it. Fabrics you can dye: cotton, linen & viscose. Lighter shades on wool, silk, polyester. Fabrics you can't dye: pure polyester, acrylic, nylon and fabric with special finishes. Wash separately for first few washes to remove any excess dye The longer you leave the fabric it will soak up more colour.

Dip-Dyed Pastel Dress

DIY Fashionista

Wear It: Match this dress with black accessories to emphasize the colourful section of the dress. Dresses are the most simple way to dress. They make creating an ensemble impossibly easy because all you have to do to create a different looks is to choose your accessories. I have a love of reinvented dresses, found in vintage stores and turned into modern, on-trend pieces. No matter what your look, dresses from vintage stores have the potential to hit the jackpot because the mix of eras creates a huge diversity in styles. Simply choose your favourite decade and hone in on items from that era. When reinventing vintage items, one of my favourite techniques is using dye to change the colour and look of a dress. Using dyes in DIY projects is fun and, although sometimes messy, the results are amazing. In the last few years, the dip-dye trend has resurfaced and is popular across the world. First seen in the hair of Japanese girls in the Harajuku district of Tokyo, the look quickly became mainstream [in beauty with ombre dying?] and in clothes has been seen since in designer collections, on dresses, skirts and tops, [such as Prada s/s 2004?]. Creating dip-dyed pieces yourself really couldn’t be easier – it just involves carefully dipping your item into dye while making sure not to get dye anywhere else on the fabric. In this project vintage cotton dress has been transformed using this technique. Tip: If you don’t have an outdoor area in which to do this project, put the bucket in your shower or bath so that you don’t splash dye on the floor. Tip: Take your time when dip-dying and always dip less of the dress than you first think you need to. You can always go back and dip more. Tip: Always test the dye mixture with a square of surplus fabric first; this way you can see how quickly the fabic will absorb the dyle and also the concentration of colour you want to achieve.

Wedding Veil Canopy

Kirstie's Vintage Home

Reusing an old item in a new way gives it another lease of life and allows you to incorporate a very personal item into your room design. Like many former brides up and down the country, Janine had used her wedding veil on her big day and then kept it hidden away for the next ten years. This was a pity, because her grandmother had hand-stitched it when she was 90, so the piece held special significance. Happily, when Janine and Shaun decided on a fin de siècle look for their bedroom, it provided a great opportunity to reuse the veil in a new and romantic way. Legendary textile and interior designer Sue Timney took the veil out of the cupboard and incorporated it into a beautiful canopy to hang above the couple ’s bed. The best bit is that she didn’t damage the veil in any way, so should Janine ever wish to pass it on to future generations for its original purpose, she still could. The main part of the canopy consists of three layers of silk, which were dyed in toning shades of grey and silver to complement the room’s colour scheme. The edges of these under-layers are bound with undyed silk ribbon to hold them together, and that ribbon provides a visual link to the bound edges of the veil, which was simply draped over the post supporting the canopy. The result was a beautiful and romantic addition to the bedroom. Have you or another family member got a wedding veil tucked away that might be ripe for reinvention? If not, you can buy vintage wedding veils from specialist shops, and occasionally they pop up in charity shops and markets.

Diy Tie Dye

Make yourself tie dye, fast and easy.

DIY - TIE DYE. It is a process that requires that most precious of ingredients, time. On the other hand, little intervention is required once the dye-pot has been set up. Be warned, though — the process will test your patience as you burn to investigate the exciting things happening in your containers. The equipment required is laughably simple; merely as large a collection of jars with lids as you can muster. The beauty of the process is that the jars do not even need to be rinsed in advance, as remnant jams, pickles and sauces can all act as interesting mordant adjuncts. Solar dyeing is another way of using up fabric scraps and ends of dye baths, or small handfuls of dye-stuffs that are not worth boiling up, as well as being a simple path to colour if you don’t have time or space for the more complicated dye processes. sealing wax If planning to leave the jar for an extended time, place a small stone on the fibre being dyed to weight it down so that the contents do not break the surface, and pour a quantity of melted wax into the vessel. This will prevent mould growing on the dye, and even though the wax may melt in the heat of the day it should remain impenetrable to air. (To recycle the wax, empty out the contents when they are cool and the wax is solid.)

Multicoloured Yarns

Silk, in particular, has an affinity for plant dyes, and colours beautifully.

Multicoloured yarns for knitting and embroidery can be very expensive to purchase and quite simple to dye.
