I received a tutorial on how to make a maxi dress on youtube.com, but in my efforts to not be wasteful, I used my bed sheet(that did not fit my bed) as the fabric, instead of purchasing fabric!

Rip the elastic off the fitted sheet with a seam ripper ( save the elastic). Then rip the seams that are connecting the bed sheet corners.
Take Measurements: Measure from the bust to your feet ( add 1 inch to account for hemming) Measure around the fullest part of you body ( add 1 or 2 inches to this measurement for fabric that does not stretch. Mark those measurements on the sheet/fabric and cut what you measured. Measure the saved elastic around the top of your bust ( be sure to stretch it a little for a good fit).
Turn the cut fabric inside out and and lay it flat ( be sure that it fits around you). Sew up the open end of the fabric. This sewn edge will be the back of the dress.
Sew your pre-measured elastic into the top of the dress. Then hem the bottom of the dress if needed.
The dress is done, now you can dress it up with a belt, or make straps for it! *Check the alternate looks at the top of the page.
