A serger is a special type of sewing machine that is used to prevent edges of your garment from fraying. The stitch allows a bit of stretch, which is great for sewing seams of knits directly. When sewing wovens, I stitch my seam first with a sewing machine, then finish the edge with a serger, to get a secure stitch.

With right sides together, pin and stitch the seam. I use a piece of blue painter's tape to help me keep a consistent seam allowance as I go.
Press open the seam.
Next, finish the edges of your seams. I serge each side of the seam flap separately so I can keep it pressed open.
Here's what the seam looks like once finished and both sides are serged.
If you are going to press both sides of the seam flap in the same direction, as you would do at a waist seam, you can serge the seam flaps together.
