Description

This tutorial gives you tips and tricks on how to sew a rolled hem by machine, using a rolled hem foot. The trickiest part is the beginning, it's all in the preparation! It will take a bit of practice like any technique, but it is a great way to finish straight and curved hems on light to medium weight fabrics.

Instructions

  1. Small 107691 2f2015 02 26 125859 20150225 img 6194

Get out your rolled hem foot. It's the one with a curved piece of metal in the middle.

  2. Small 107691 2f2015 02 26 130058 20150225 img 6238

Position the edge of the hem under your foot, just so that it aligns with it.

  3. Small 107691 2f2015 02 26 130136 20150225 img 6244

Sew just a few stitches. The threads will make it easier to control the fabric when starting your rolled hem. Cut the threads from the machine but leave the other ones long.

  4. Small 107691 2f2015 02 26 130303 20150225 img 6250

Fold the beginning of your hem along the stitches and press. This is also to make it easier to start the rolled hem.

  5. Small 107691 2f2015 02 26 130358 20150225 img 6262

Slide the pressed edge between the curled pieces of the foot, until it sits just under the needle. Check if it has curled in on itself. It might help to lower the presser foot just a little while sliding it through.

Start sewing. Be careful to backstitch just one or two stitches: the fabric cannot move back through the curled piece once sewn. Use your fingers to guide the fabric through the curled piece, keeping it even. Check if the needle position is right, you want the stitches just on the edge of the folded part so it cannot unfold.

Keep stitching until the end. That's it, you've made a tiny rolled hem!
