Smarten up your act by creating an on-trend peplum blouse using only a cropped top and half a yard of fabric. With winter upon us, you can update a cropped summer top and refashion it to create a blouse that will glam up the most hectic of mornings. You can match the colors as I did for this project or make the peplum a different color entirely (think graphic color blocking). The main thing is to make sure the peplum length flares gently over the hips--it shouldn't be any longer than six to eight inches, depending on your height. Too long and it's a tunic--too short and it's a tutu (and we wouldn't want to look like a lost ballerina, after all).

WHAT YOU NEED: --Cropped top (mine is from H/M) --1 yard fabric --Sewing machine
Cut rectangle of fabric: width-- 4-6 inches wide length-- waist measurement plus half that number. Sew ends together and run gathering stitch along top. I cut the rectangle of fabric on the bias rather than straight on the grain to create that slight fluttery effect without too much bunch.
Put narrow hem along bottom edge.
With right sides together, stitch top of peplum to bottom edge of top. Press.
Done.
Pair with your favorite work day pieces.
